Coronavirus (COVID-19) Booster Vaccine
A Coronavirus (COVID-19) booster vaccine dose helps improve the protection you have from your first two doses of the vaccine.
It helps give you longer-term protection against getting seriously ill from COVID-19.
Why do I need a booster dose?
The COVID-19 booster vaccine is being rolled out because, as with any vaccine, the level of protection lowers over time. A booster dose will extend the protection of your first two doses, resulting in longer-term protection.
The booster reduces the risk of needing hospital admission because of the COVID-19 infection.
COVID-19 booster vaccine and flu vaccine
Most people who can get a COVID-19 booster vaccine are also eligible for the annual flu vaccine.
If you are offered both vaccines, it is safe to have them at the same time.
Can you still catch COVID-19 after having the vaccine?
The COVID-19 vaccination reduces the chances of you suffering from COVID-19 disease. It may take a few days for your body to build up some protection from the booster.
Like all medicines, no vaccine is entirely effective, and some people may still get COVID-19 despite having a vaccination, but your symptoms should be less severe.
